Statistics tell us that around 500,000 trucking accidents occur every year in the United States. Of these, approximately 5,000 trucking accidents result in fatalities. One out of every eight traffic fatalities involves a trucking collision. Most fatal truck accidents occur in the day as opposed to night, and the great majority occur on weekends, when traffic is heavier. Sixty-eight percent of all fatal truck accidents happen not in cities, but in rural regions. Driving under the influence (DUI) is regarded as one of the leading causes of fatal truck accidents today. Trucks can become lethal weapons when driven by tired, inexperienced or intoxicated drivers.

Trucks are heavy and long, and because of their size it's often difficult for them to stay within the same lanes as smaller passenger vehicles when they are turning. It is also easy for truck drivers to miss vehicles that are close alongside, driving in their blind spot. Truck drivers must concentrate on the road for long hours, and driver fatigue is a common cause of truck accidents. A simple mistake that would not so serious if done in a car coud be very serious when done by a truck. It's not an easy job.
